An officer not on leave of absence whose properly authorised absence from duty is on grounds of ill-health is regarded as being on sick leave. For a non-hospitalised officer, the maximum aggregate sick leave during any twelve-month period is six weeks; where aggregate ill-health absence exceeds six weeks within 12 calendar months, the officer must appear before a Medical Board to determine whether he should be invalided, and absence in excess of the prescribed aggregate is without pay. A hospitalised officer may initially be granted up to three months' sick leave on a certificate issued by a Government Medical Officer; if still hospitalised at the end of that period, the Permanent Secretary/Head must arrange Medical Board examination to determine whether the officer should be invalided or allowed further paid sick leave.
